On Tuesday morning, Dec. 17, a deputy was on patrol along Telegraph Road when he noticed a Suzuki motorcycle missing a license plate, leading to a series of unfortunate events for Fredericksburg resident Jonathan Cruz.
As the bike turned onto Midway Road, the deputy activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop; however, Instead of stopping, the rider spun around and sped off, ignoring the deputy’s commands to pull over.
The deputy lost sight of the speeding motorcycle but wasn’t ready to call it quits, officials said.
After speaking with witnesses and conducting some quick investigative work, Tully identified the suspect as Cruz, who was tracked to a North Stafford neighborhood, where they found him and thee same Suzuki motorcycle - which had a dead battery and halted his great escape.
Cruz admitted he saw the deputy attempting to pull him over but couldn’t explain why he decided to flee. He also had no explanation for the missing license plate or why he was riding without a motorcycle endorsement.
Cruz is now facing several charges:
- Felony eluding;
- Reckless driving;
- Driving without a motorcycle endorsement;
- Driving without license plates displayed.
He’s being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $2,000 secured bond.
